Photoshoot at Sentralen: Laplace

You have already seen some of the photos of Laplace – the Palazzo Pants – worn together with Khayam by model Olivia Lindtein, with make-up & hair by Nina Hjertaas Bull and jewellery by Kaja Gjedebo Design, photographed by Wenche Hoel-Knai at Sentralen back in December, but you have not seen any details of the trousers yet. So here they are. I have finished the pattern and shortened the inside leg length as well as the crotch length.

Laplace are Palazzo Pants; long, wide-legged and worn high with an elasticated waistband. Named after the mathematician Pierre-Simon Laplace are these trousers with side seam cables and pockets. The remaining parts are knitted in stockinette stitch to make the cable stand out. Laplace is worked flat in four pieces for the ultimate fit and made to be worn with the Khayam jacket as a set. Why not make Laplace into culottes by making them shorter, to below the knees? Both are knitted in the Bendigo Woollen Mills Classic 5 ply with a crepe construction using a 3.75 mm/US 5 needle and a 24 stitches and 34 rows gauge in stockinette stitch measuring 10 cm/4″ square. The yarn was generously sponsored by Bendigo Woollen Mill.

The pants are made in four parts, two for each leg, then seamed before the waistband is worked like a double hem in the round. Elastic is placed inside the hem before it is closed and bound off. A circular needle is used due to the large number of stitches.

Measure the full length against another pair of wide-legged trousers for fit. The inner leg length can be adjusted before you shape the crotch and deduct about 20 to 25 cm/8 to 9.75” for Culottes (mid-ankle to below the knee). The crotch length can be shortened after shaping the side with a maximum of 4.5 cm/1.75” to allow for space to shape the side to the waist. Reduce the waist by working double decreases (sssk or k3tog) instead of single decreases.

I have graded the pants in sizes XS to 5XL but combined some of the sizes due to the wide waist circumference – from 92 to 132 cm/36.25 to 52″ – before the elastic is inserted into the waistband. The intended ease is 18 cm to 28 cm/7 to 11” positive ease at waist. Sample shown in size S/M is 100 cm/39.25” (with elastic inserted to 80 cm/31.5) and worn with 36 cm/14.25” positive ease on model who stands 167 cm/5’6″ tall.

The test knit of both designs – the Khayam jacket and the Laplace pants – begins on the 6th of June, before the patterns will be released in both English and Norwegian.
