Hanne Kristin Rhode Wearing Wilma Lind Jacket

Photo: Morten Bendiksen

This is a blogpost I thought I had written a year ago about the Wilma Lind Jacket, but for some reason did not. They do say time flies… Former Police Investigator, now author and television presenter Hanne Kristin Rohde and I collaborated on designing a jacket for her crime fiction heroine Wilma Lind, last year. Sample knitter Nadja made the jacket in red for my photoshoot, while Grete knitted it in soft turquoise a bit later, both in Sølje pelt wool by Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk. A third sample was made in natural white in Vilje lambswool by Anne-Lise. You have already seen the red version photographed on model Alexandra Eissinger and on me but not these stunning photos of Hanne Kristin Rhode taken by photographer Morten Bendiksen.

Hanne Kristin wrote the first part of the introduction: “Police Investigator Wilma Lind is Norwegian, just like author Hanne Kristin Rohde and the yarn used in the sample: Sølje by Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk. Last but not least is the fact that the designer Linda Marveng is also Norwegian. The Wilma Lind Jacket is inspired by the protagonist in her crime books: Strong, brave, weak, smart, impulsive, warm, uncertain, and daring. Wilma Lind has the ability to confront and fight – and with a need to be noticed, just like the rest of us. The sample is worked in red to symbolise power and hope. In white to symbolise blank sheets and in soft turquoise to capture the universe.”

I wrote the second part: A long a-line jacket with cables covering the back, and moving cables on the front. Instead of a shawl collar the jacket was given a deep v-neck and a loose shawl to use as a collar. The body is worked in pieces while the sleeves are worked in the round after the rib to the underarm. It is knitted in the in the lustrous pelt yarn with a mohair feel, Sølje from Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk.

The body is worked flat in pieces, unlike the long sleeves which are worked in the round to the armhole. The front cables move from their center position on the body towards the armhole and shoulder by increasing and decreasing into stockinette stitch. One front cable ends in the v-neck shaping but it is possible to work two cables to the shoulder by working extra stitches to gather cable row and decrease 1 stitch between cables, if necessary increase 1 stitch at either v-neck or armhole edge depending on size.

The English pattern, available on Ravelry, has been test knitted and the jacket is available in sizes XS to 2XL, while the shawl is in one size. The red sample is knitted in size S, while the turquoise and white are both in size M. The Norwegian pattern is only available on Hanne Kristin Rohde’s website. The collaboration and press coverage has been has been an extraordinary experience. Finally I must admit that I just love how well the jacket suits Hanne Kristin.

Wilma Lind Jackets Knitted By Kari and Sissel

Kari Kvalberg (left) posted this photo in one of the Norwegian knitting groups on Facebook last week and I was so thrilled to see her and Sissel Hellum, both wearing their Wilma Lind Jackets. They are Norwegian, but this amazing photo is taken at the Caucasus mountain range in Georgia. Kari has posted a series of photos from their recent trip to Georgia and Armenia, which I have been following with interest on both Facebook and Instagram. I was fortunate to met these two lovely women last autumn at Strikkefestivalen/the knitting festival in Fredrikstad where they were attending my Cable Masterclass. They have both used the luscious Sølje Pelsullgarn from Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk in size Medium, but choose two different colours. I love how well it suits them both! Thank you so much!

The Norwegian pattern of the Wilma Lind Jacket is available from the author of the crime books about Police Inspector Wilma Lind, Hanne Kristin Rohde, while the English pattern is also available from my Ravelry store and on Loveknitting.

Wilma Lind Next Chapter

Author, “Åsted Norge/Crime Scene Norway” television presenter and former Police Inspector Hanne Kristin Rohde has just published her new Wilma Lind crime in Norwegian, the fourth in the series. Hanne Kristin has sold more than 250 000 books in Norway but her thrillers have not been translated to English, yet. The title is “Offerdyr” which means “sacrificial animals” in English. How is this related to knitting and me, you ask? Except for the fact that I love reading her books, Hanne Kristin contacted me to design a long jacket for Wilma Lind, her protagonist, a couple of years back. That was the beginning of our collaboration. And yes, she does knit but have not done so for awhile since her writing take up most of her time. A strong red colour was chosen since Wilma is brave and daring. The wonderful Sølje Pelsull/pelt wool yarn from Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk was our choice.

The book has been on the best seller list since it was published several weeks back and it was selected to be part of the Bokklubben/Book Club here in Norway, see the top photo.

The Norwegian & English pattern is available to buy from hannekristinrohde.no, while the English pattern is also available at Ravelry and Loveknitting. I am so thrilled that Hanne Kristin is wearing the Wilma Lind jacket and shawl, on the back flap and that my name is on the Author Thanks list at the back of the book. Thank you, Hanne Kristin! Now, I look forward to reading it, and I will be doing so while knitting (read: using clothes peg to hold the book open for me).

Wilma Lind Jacket in Familien 20/2017

My collaboration with crime author Hanne Kristin Rohde is all over media hence for the first time (and probably last) you will find my name mentioned even in the gossip magazine “Se og Hør“/See and Listen. This week Hanne Kristin has been interviewed by the “Finansavisen“/Financial Paper, “Se og Hør” and “Familien” and you can read about her idea for our collaboration, her  long career in the police, her Wilma Lind protagonist, her part in the television series “Åsted Norge“/Crime Scene Norway, her presentations and life. It is a fascinating as well as inspiring read or what do you think about the headline: Lady in dead by the abcnyheter.no? Hanne Kristin is as formidable as Wilma Lind, and I am not alone in waiting for another new book in the series. Yes, I did meet her – I recognised her from television – and what a blast it was! In the latest issue of Familien you will also find the pattern for the jacket. Hanne Kristin is featured in all the three different colours of the Wilma Lind Jacket, knitted in Sølje Pelsull/Peltwool (red and turquoise) and in Vilje Lamullgarn (natural) both from Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk. It suits her so well and she is very photogenic.Above is the first part of the interview with Hanne Kristin in Familien with the headline Criminally good handcraft. She does not have the time to knit any more but has knit a lot in her past.

Here she is in the red version, the sample in size Small knitted by Nadia, aka 77stricknadel which I had made, before Grete Jenssen, aka ma9 on Ravelry knitted the turquoise version in size Medium and Anne-Lise Dye knitted the natural version in size Medium for Hanne Kristin.

Here is the beginning of the interview from “Se og Hør”. The Wilma Lind jacket has been test knitted in my Ravelry group, and is available in sizes XS to 2XL with a bust measurement of 84 to 126 cm/33 to 49.5″.

The Familien magazine is available at selected news agents and super markets in Norway. If you are in Norway you can also buy a digital version for iPad, see www.klikk.no. If you live abroad you can order the Norwegian magazine by e-mailing kari.bachke@egmont.com and then transfer payment into their bank account.

You will also find the Norwegian pattern for sale at hannekristinrohde.no and the English version at www.ravelry.com.
