Shinju Pattern Released

Shinju COVERMy wedding shawl design, Shinju, is now released in English in my Ravelry Store. The shawl is knitted in the divine Mondial Perle yarn with beads on the yarn itself for extra glamour. The yarn comes in several other classic colors which will make the shawl wearable for any party and not only a wedding. I am pleased to say that the pattern has been test knitted in my Ravelry group before its release. Shinju was brilliantly photographed by Eivind Røhne at Ekebergrestauranten for the Norwegian special magazine Familien Kreativ, published in March. Gorgeous model Alexandria Eissinger/Sweden Models is wearing the shawl. Hair and make up is by Sissel Fylling. The stunning jewelry is by Kaja Gjedebo DesignKGD. Here is my introduction to the pattern: Love, affection and beautiful are all parts of the Japanese word for pearl and was perfect for this lacy shawl knitted in a luxurious fiber mix with both mohair and silk with beads attached on an Italian yarn from Mondial called Perle. Ruffled bell borders grace each end of the shawl and highlight Judith Bech’s Secret; a divine felted wedding dress with a mermaid tail.

Nuala Pattern Released

Nuala COVERWe seem to have skipped Spring in Oslo and went straight into Summer. A perfect time to release the English pattern of Nuala a straight summer shawl that can be buttoned into a shrug with a matching cowl. The pattern has been test knitted in my Ravelry group. The Norwegian pattern was published in Familien Julens Småstrikk last November. Above you see the set worn by model Anne Dorthe/Team Models with hair & make up by Sissel Fylling, jewelry by Kaja Gjedebo Design, all brilliantly captured by Eivind Røhne. Here is my introduction to the pattern: An intricate woven lacy stitch pattern by Lynne Barr is highlighted with the cable structured Softknit Cotton by Rowan in this reversible rectangular shawl that can be buttoned into a shrug. Wear it with a cowl as a collar.

Size: One Size

Finished Measurement: Shawl: Width: 42.5 cm/16.75″. Length: 143 cm/56.25″ Cowl: Width: 70 cm/27.5″. Height: 28 cm/11″

Yarn: Rowan, Softknit Cotton (92% cotton, 8% polyamide, 50 g, 105 m/115 yds). Sample is knitted in Marina 580. https://www.knitrowan.com/yarns/softknit-cotton               Shawl: 6 skeins; 588 m/643 yds. Cowl: 2 skeins; 202 m/221 yds.

Needles: 4.5 mm/US 7 circular needle (60 cm/24″) for shawl and cowl. Adjust needle size as needed to match gauge.

Notions: 8 buttons (21 mm/0.82″), 4 stitch markers and yarn needle.

Gauge: 17 sts and 25 rows in Dropped sts using 4.5 mm/US 7 measures 10 cm/4″ square. 20 sts and 28 rows in st st measures 10 cm/4″ square.

Notes: The shawl and cowl are both knitted flat. You can easily adjust the width of the shawl and the circumference of the cowl by removing or adding pattern repeats of 9-sts. The first 4 buttonholes are worked on the RS, while the last 4 buttonholes are worked on the WS. Both are made using the same one-row method. The cowl is sewn together, but add buttonholes rows instead if you prefer and work selvedge st as on shawl.

New Design: Saqqara

XT1A5332Named after the step pyramid in Egypt, I have created my own Saqqara. A stunning reversable lace pattern with triangular shapes, adorn the rectangular shawl with a shawl collar and the matching loose sleeves. Like jewelry the tucks frame the hands on the loose sleeves and divide the patterns on the shawl. By combining a beautiful pure combed wool called Huldra from Hillesvåg with the luscious Dreamline Soul from Du Store Alpakka, I found my rich yarn shade and texture. Use the shawl with a shawl collar around your neck, shoulders, bust or upside down, just as you prefer, with or without the loose sleeves. Yes, it is not the first set consisting of a shawl with a shawl collar and loose sleeves, I have designed. This time I added a tuck on the wrong side of the shawl as well, making sure it looks equally divine on both sides. Another reason why I wanted to make one more was that I was certain it would look divine over one of Judith Bech’s wedding gowns. I will self publish the Norwegian pattern on Ravelry in February, while I will have the English pattern test knitted in my group this fall before its release.

XT1A5356Both the shawl and the loose sleeves come in 3 different sizes: XS/S (M/L, XL/2XL). I have graded the width and length of the shawl but kept one length on the loose sleeves which easily can be adjusted. The set is knitted using a 4 mm/US 6 needle with a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows in stocking stitch with 1 strand of each yarn. The yarn was kindly sponsored by both Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk and Du Store Alpakka.

XT1A5347The loose sleeves have elastic inserted into the top hem to keep them in place. They are knitted in the round, unlike the shawl, with 2 circular needles held parallel to make the hem and tucks. The collar on the shawl is shaped by short rows, and ends in an i-cord bind off. One tuck divides the patterns before the collar on the shawl and a second one is worked on the wrong side to emphasize the reversible shawl. Wear the shawl which way you like best or wear them all, as I do. The set looked ravishing on top of Judith Bech’s Swan Lake wedding dress. Hair and make up artist Sissel Fylling pulled the shawl collar up so it stood and regally supported Alexandria’s neck. Soon I will reveal the professional photos so different from these of me taken by my husband in a rush before the photoshoot.

Shawl Fever – Viajante by Martina Behm

The shawl knitting fashion continues. Not only are beautiful books and useful videos on DVD or downloadable workshops on traditional shawls launched such as “Orenburg Knitting. Knitting Gossamer Webs”, see knittingdaily but also modern takes with newly developed shapes are appearing. I am intrigued by Martina Bhem’s shawl Viajante, see photo below. She explains in her pattern: “How about making one that, instead of just being a flat piece of fabric, is three-dimensional, knit in the round and doubles as a big loop, hood and very big cowl? Well, here it is: Viajante (Portugese for “traveller”) takes your knitting to another dimension!”. The hunt for yarn – yes, not a great surprise really since it is knitted in the divine Wollmeise Lace – can be seen at Ravelry and at Strikkesida/The Knitting page a Norwegian Facebook group just to mention a few. Currently there are 756 Viajante projects listed which are either in progress or finished. And I know of at last one more on the go which I am excited to see when finished – no, it is not mine even though I would love to knit one too! You can see more photos and buy the pattern here at ravelry. Read about wollmeise-one-of-my-favourite-yarns and then join the Wollmeiseholics Anonymous Group on Ravelry.
