Photoshoot at Architecture Museum: Harding Cardigan

Here is the last of the ten garments photographed in late November at the National Museum – Architecture; the Harding Cardigan. The English pattern was first published in Interweave Knits Summer 2016 and will be released on Ravelry with these new brilliant photos taken by Eivind Røhne at the beginning of May. The Norwegian pattern will be published in the magazine Familien at a later date. Model Silje Andresen/Team Models looked stunning in the cardigan worn over a pair of black pencil trouser and a black top. Her hair & makeup is by Sissel Fylling and you can glimpse the Ivy hanging earrings by Kaja Gjedebo Design.

Here is my introduction to the cardigan with the working title of Barr Cardigan: Allover telescope lattice gives this straight long cardigan a textural feel. An open rib cable cord collar, knitted separately, adds a modern look to the cardigan. Wear it open or close it with a shawl pin. The cardigan is named after the cabled rib cord pattern’s creator; Lynne Barr. The body is knitted straight from the bottom and up in parts with extra ease for comfort, while the sleeves are knitted in the round.

I suggested the rustic Brooklyn Tweed Shelter and editor Meghan Babin agreed with my choice and suggested the shade Foothills. Shelter is made of 100% wool with 128 meters/140 yards on each 100 gram skein. The gauge is: 22 stitches and 27 rows = 10 cm/4″ in Telescope Lattice pattern; 26 stitches and 18 rows = 10 cm/4″ in Cabled Rib Cord pattern. The sample was knitted using 4.5 mm/US 7 needle.

The open cable pattern I wanted for the collar, is the Cabled Rib Cord from “Reversible Knitting: 50 Brand New Groundbreaking Patterns. The allover Telescope Lattice is fun to knit and not as time consuming as it looks. The cardigan pattern is available in 6 sizes with a bust circumference of 85 (90, 96, 106, 114, 123) cm/33.5 (35.5, 38, 41.5, 45, 48.5)”.

Yes, of course I had to pick a couple of photos with the divine boots you might recognise by now: Benedetta black by Monica Stålvang. Not only does it give you a better idea of the full length of the cardigan it also shows off the cloister next to the Fehn Pavilion at National Museum – Architecture even better.

Nuala Pattern Released

Nuala COVERWe seem to have skipped Spring in Oslo and went straight into Summer. A perfect time to release the English pattern of Nuala a straight summer shawl that can be buttoned into a shrug with a matching cowl. The pattern has been test knitted in my Ravelry group. The Norwegian pattern was published in Familien Julens Småstrikk last November. Above you see the set worn by model Anne Dorthe/Team Models with hair & make up by Sissel Fylling, jewelry by Kaja Gjedebo Design, all brilliantly captured by Eivind Røhne. Here is my introduction to the pattern: An intricate woven lacy stitch pattern by Lynne Barr is highlighted with the cable structured Softknit Cotton by Rowan in this reversible rectangular shawl that can be buttoned into a shrug. Wear it with a cowl as a collar.

Notions: 8 buttons (21 mm/0.82″), 4 stitch markers and yarn needle. 

Gauge: 17 sts and 25 rows in Dropped sts using 4.5 mm/US 7 measures 10 cm/4″ square. 20 sts and 28 rows in st st measures 10 cm/4″ square.

 Notes: The shawl and cowl are both knitted flat. You can easily adjust the width of the shawl and the circumference of the cowl by removing or adding pattern repeats of 9-sts. The first 4 buttonholes are worked on the RS, while the last 4 buttonholes are worked on the WS. Both are made using the same one-row method. The cowl is sewn together, but add buttonholes rows instead if you prefer and work selvedge st as on shawl.

Harding Cardigan in Interweave Knits Summer 2016

FC_KNSummer16_NB-768x1018I am so thrilled to be part of the exciting Interweave Knits Summer 2016 issue with my Harding Cardigan. On the cover is the beautiful lace top; Clemente Tank by Mary Anne Benedetto, aka Apriori Knits. I was inspired by the submission call and its topics: Boho Lace and Mountain House Retreat. My submission was accepted and fitted into the last theme. I choose to design in the rustic Brooklyn Tweed Shelter and instantly knew what stitch pattern I wanted for the collar: Cabled Rib Cord from “Reversible Knitting: 50 Brand New Groundbreaking Patterns. The openwork texture of it is a great contrast to any denser cabled fabric on the body. I choose to use a 4.5 mm/US 7 circular needle for density and to accommodate the large number of stitches. While the body is densely cabled, the collar pattern is created by working extra rows in rib before each cable crossing. The gauge for the allover Telescope Lattice pattern is 22 sts and 27 rows, while it is 26 sts and 18 rows in the Cabled Rib Cord pattern. The cardigan pattern is available in 6 sizes with a bust circumference of 85 (90, 96, 106, 114, 123) cm/33.5 (35.5, 38, 41.5, 45, 48.5)”. The model is wearing the second size with 1.5″ of positive ease.

In my submission I suggested neutral colors like Woodsmoke, Nest or Sweatshirt, but editor Meghan Babin wanted Foothills. I had no objections to the color change and thought it was a clever choice, especially after reading how Brooklyn Tweed describes the color: “Prairie haze. Fields after the harvest. Foothills is a mild sage green comprising white, grey, and yellow shaded with black, the palest member of a family that includes Tent and Artifact.” This issue of Interweave Knits is Meghan’s first “full” issue and I think she has done a brilliant job, together with the Interweave team!

You can easily adjust the width of the shawl and the circumference of the cowl by removing or adding pattern repeats of 9-sts. The pattern only comes in one size. The first 4 buttonholes are worked on the Right Side, while the last 4 buttonholes are worked on the Wrong Side. Both are made using the same one-row method. The yarn was generously donated by Permin.

20150529 Linda Marveng HO 169 copyThe large Karakoram earrings and Hekla ring in silver lifted the outfit into evening wear in my opinion. Both are available from acknowledged designer Kaja Gjedebo. The staircase where Anne Dorthe is sitting leads down to the platoon, where we had hoped to take some more photos but due to both the bright sunshine and the strong wind we had to give it up. Just to take these photos, editor Mary-Ann Astrup was providing shadow holding a large screen see my behind the scenes photos.

New Design: Nuala

XT1A2870I love this intricate woven lacy stitch pattern by Lynne Barr. I found it so well suited to the cable structured Rowan Softknit Cotton and selected a color which captures summer in an instant; a turquoise called Marina. The stitch pattern is reversible so well suited for a rectangular shawl that can be buttoned into a shrug. If you wear it with a cowl as a collar you have the perfect accompaniment to your favorite summer dress. The Norwegian pattern will be printed in the special issue Familien Småstrikk this autumn, while the English pattern will be published on Ravelry. The photos show me wearing it, they are taken by my husband a few days before the professional photo shoot at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter.

XT1A2861Both the shawl and the cowl are knitted flat with double seed stitch bands. You can easily adjust the width of the shawl and the circumference of the cowl by removing or adding pattern repeats. The shawl has 8 buttonholes, 4 at each end, and I found some beautiful dyed mother of pearl buttons at Perlehuset in Oslo. I have had knitting and pattern design (making neater buttonholes) help from both Airin Hansen, aka Teodor on Ravelry, and Grete Jenssen, aka ma9 on Ravelry. Thank you both for all your assistance!

XT1A2866The dropped stitch pattern has its own rhythm and it is not as difficult to work as it might appear. Since the stitch pattern has a number of centering stitches, I had to make separate buttonholes and could not use the dropped stitches since they were too far into the shawl itself. Above you see me wearing it with black but the set does look great with white too! I look forward to showing you the fantastic photos Eivind took of model Dorthe wearing this set.

Conic Coat Pattern Released

In February after the completed test knit of the English pattern, I added Conic Coat with chart, schematic and video links to my Ravelry Store. The coat, knitted in Hifa Embla using a 4 mm/US 6, is worn by gorgeous dancer Francesca Golfetto, with beautiful hair & make up by Line Sekkingstad, brilliantly photographed by Kim Müller. The pattern was first published in Norwegian in the special issue Familien Strikk in August 2014. Familiens Strikkebok Photoshoot: Conic Coat

I have achieved my goal of designing a coat with architectonic elements you want to knit and wear. At least I do hope so. The Conic Coat first planned for Brooklyn Tweed has been knitted in Embla – Hifa 3, in a stunning purple beige color using 4 mm/US 6 and will be published in Norwegian in the separate magazine Familiens Strikkebok out in late August. Here is the coat finished, not that many hours before the photoshoot at Aker Brygge actually. My chosen photographer is Kim Müller, model is beautiful dancer Francesca Golfetto and make up & hair stylist is Line Sekkingstad, they all made my knitting projects look so gorgeous! This is how dreams come true.

14-05-29_564Initially I imagined it in a blue tweed, but since my design did not make it into the Brooklyn Tweed selected few, and I spotted Monica Stålvang’s stunning brown shoes, I knew that the coat had to match those. Hence I wanted a photo of Francesca sitting showing off the shoes too!

14-05-29_567I have made the coat in sizes S to 2XL, with a finished bust measurement excluding collar of 92 cm to 126 cm/36.25 to 49.5″. Francesca is a size XS, Norwegian clothes size 34/UK 6/US 2 but wearing size S. I will show you photos of me wearing it too since I am a size S, Norwegian clothes size 36-38/UK 8-10/US 4-6 but they will not be as marvelous, obviously. I plan a test knit of the English pattern in my Ravelry group in August.

Design in Progress: Conic Coat

DSCN1704Here is another of my designs in progress. I have slightly modified one of my Brooklyn Tweed Designs Submissions, and the pattern will be published in Familien’s Strikkebok this autumn instead. The yarn I chose is Embla – Hifa 3, a pure wool with bounce, in a shade called lilac beige (read: in other words; taupe) which is perfect for a certain pair of Monica Stålvang shoes. I do hope the coat will match her stunning shoes, and I am ready for the challenge! The stitch pattern I have chosen is Blocks and Triangles by Lynne Barr – the boring blocks are on the back, and they are completely flat unlike the sculptural triangles on the front. Yes, they are made with a DPN or a cable needle in hand. Above is the bottom of one of the sleeves, I will start making the other now, so that I can work them together to the end. After pondering for awhile I decided not to knit them in the round because of the equal amount of purl and knit, the yarn overs on the WS, and the folding. I have also tested how I wanted to make the hem and to make the set up perfect I chose the old fashion way of sewing it up.  The coat itself will have an a-line shape and end in a large shawl collar in a seeded rib pattern. I am very pleased it is an addictive stitch pattern, just as long as I remember  to increase along the way, since I am working as fast as I can with plenty of ideas flowing through my head at the moment!
