Barcelona Knits 2019 Part 1

I can confirm that Barcelona Knits! Several people have asked me just that after I told them I was going to the Barcelona Knits Festival 2019! What a festival it has been, I have had a blast and must admit that I have never been to a festival so well organised as this one! The four behind the festival, running for the second time around, are: Anna, aka misswasabi81; Marta, aka tricotoseando; Eva, aka lalanalu and Kiara, aka lalanalu. You can see them at the front in the Instagram photo below. Above you see me photographed against their wall, wearing the Yellow Gold Pullover.

The venue was the World Trade Center in the harbour, I was teaching in the Mohair Classroom and on the television screen outside the door was the name of the workshop, my name and my photo. The view from the classroom was magnificent, just take a look above.

All participants to each workshop received a free ball from one of the sponsors of the festival. I on the other hand received a large box from one of them: Las Hidalgas, a goodie bag from the festival and presents from one of the attendees after my first workshop.

On Sunday 17th, about 1,5 hour after the market hall closed, a group photo was taken of the organisers, vendors and workshop holders. You would not believe how far knitters had travelled to come to this festival. They had come from the US, Peru, Taiwan, Scandinavia, Germany, the UK and Spain, just to mention a few of the nationalities present. I even met two Norwegians I knew from Stavanger at the airport in Oslo going to the same event as me.

I knew that my test knitter, Heidi Torres was coming from Sweden together with three of her friends, since she wrote to me and told me that only two of them got tickets for my workshops “Smart Knitting Techniques” since they were too late in booking. Heidi, aka Heidi197 on Ravelry, was very easy to spot since she wore my design Mistale in a gorgeous bright pink. Above you see us, and I am wearing my Ena. After my first workshop, there were many that wanted to take a photo with me and that was fun!

Michael and I flew in on the Friday afternoon, leaving our house very early in the morning.  Barcelona Knits had booked our flights as well as the hotel for us, it was only about 10 minutes away from the venue. They also offered to organise a taxi from the airport, making it extremely easy for us. Arriving just after us was Susanne Sommer, aka SosuKnits, another workshop holder who flew in from Austria. We went sightseeing on Friday afternoon, before the festival began on Saturday morning at 9am. Just before the market hall opened, the queue to get it went around the inner courtyard, see above. For the second time, the festival hit another record with more than 2 000 visitors. The queue was still there, when I finished my first workshop, so I decided to visit the market hall on the Sunday instead.

My second workshop was “Perfect Fit” and not until 5pm. Straight after the workshop at 8pm, the “Tapas & Yarn Party” began. Michael had spent time in the backstage room (read: husband room) which had a fabulous supply of fruit, water, tea & coffee and snacks. Julie Dubreux, aka JulieKnitsInParis, who I first met at Bergen Strikkefestival; Isabell Kraemer, aka lilalu72, and Anna Maltz aka SweaterSpotter, who I first met at Vienna Wool & Design, all brought their husbands too. Above is one of the exciting yarns on offer in the market hall.

Eva introduced me to the yarn company Las Hidalgas, run by Alberto Diaz, who had asked to meet me and above you can see us talking. I discovered that one of the yarns he had showed me was not in the box I was given, so I came running back in on Sunday just after the market hall had closed. They had already packed down their stand but managed to find the ball I wanted!

The “Tapas & Yarn Party” on Saturday night was at a cool place called Ultramarinos at La Rambla only 10 minutes away from the World Trade Center. A smart move since I came straight from the second workshop to the party, which was limited to 200 people. Michael and I found seats next to the Norwegian yarn dyer Norne Yarn, who had a stand at the festival, and a lovely group of Spanish knitters & crocheters. The food was fabulous and never stopped coming, so many of us were too busy eating to actually knit! To be continued…

Ena in Familien Kosestrikk 2019

The Norwegian magazine Familien has just published another special issue on knitting called “Kosestrikk”/Cosy Knitting and it landed in my postbox the day before we went to Geilo for the Knitting Weekend! That was perfect timing since it has one of my designs featured in it and I had planned to wear my Ena going to the mountains. The pattern pages have two full page photos of Emma Ross, with hair & make-up by Sissel Fylling and jewellery by Kaja Gjedebo Design, taken by brilliant photographer Eivind Røhne at Bøler Kirke/Church in Oslo.

Ena is Celtic for fiery. As you need to be passionate about cables to make this jacket. The woven cables lean towards the left and the right hence the spine has been accentuated with a twisted stitch at the center back and along front opening. Ribbing in the sides make the jacket appear casually fitted. The collar in rib can be worn open or closed and folded over. Ena is knitted in the rustic Acadia with silk noil from The Fibre Co.

The jacket is made in pieces and seamed for the best possible fit. I have graded the jacket in sizes XS to 2XL with a finished bust circumference of 84 to 124 cm/33 to 48.75″ circumference. Em is wearing size Small which measures 92 cm/36.25″ with 6 cm/2.25″ positive ease. The gauge is 21 stitches and 30 rows in stockinette stitch using 4 mm/US 6 needles measures 10 cm/4” square.

Ena Knitted by Siret

Siret took part in the test knit of Ena and chose to make it in another yarn from The Fibre Co. than the one I used in the sample; Cumbria Fingering as opposed to Acadia. She made size Medium and shortened it with 9 cm/3.5″. Here are some of the stunning photos Siret took of her daughter with an iPhone, close to her home in Estonia, on an island called Saaremaa. Siret told me that the beach is in the city of Kuressaare and has been given a funny name among locals “Titerand” which means “the beach for the babies”. Regardless of its name it is such a perfect backdrop for the taupe coloured cardigan. Siret has knitted it in the shade Eden Valley #11.

This is what Siret writes on her ravelry project page: “Ena is wonderful cabled cardigan! I love these little cables. I was afraid of sewing sleeves. But Linda has designed sleeves that fits perfectly and there’s no worries at all. Eden Valley color is green-blue. Hard to catch on photo”. Siret reveals on her profile page on Ravelry that: “My grandmother taught me to knit when I was four. I love to knit mostly cardigans and pullovers, socks and shawls. At summers I love to crochet. I have been in Raverly for a long time but I started posting my works here from June 2017.”

I love how young and cool the cardigan appears, thanks to her daughter! This was the first of my designs that Siret knit and I do hope it will not be her last. Thank you so much, Siret!

Ena Pattern Released

Orange Storm is the name of this divine shade in Acadia, a luxurious yarn mixture made of merino wool, alpaca and with silk noil from The Fibre Co. I was smitten and had to order it. Ena is the jacket I designed with the yarn, using some beautiful cables from Norah Gaughan’s brilliant Knitted Cable Sourcebook, and with bespoke buttons from Siri Berrefjord. Model Emma Ross with her flaming red hair made it look even more stunning through Eivind Røhne’s camera lens. With a little help from Sissel Fylling, who did her makeup & hair. As well as a gorgeous statement ring by Kaja Gjedebo Design. The pattern has now been test knitted in my Ravelry group, with some wonderful results. The English pattern is available on Ravelry and on Loveknitting, while the Norwegian pattern will be published in the magazine Familien at a later date.

Ena Buttons by Siri Berrefjord

Now, a study of the details, the bespoke buttons hand-made by Siri Berrefjord especially for my new design Ena. I ordered 12 buttons in the size small with a diameter of 18 millimeters/0.7″ in an orange-brown colour, by e-mail. I sent Siri my swatch – while I was knitting the sample – so that she could match the colour and take some wonderful photos. Siri is a trained photographer, as well as a jewellery designer, clothes designer and now also an co-author, see her Norwegian book: Redesign. Ena, Celtic for  fiery – perfect for both the colour and for the amount of cables – is knitted in the divine Acadia by The Fibre Co. in the shade Orange Storm. I made the swatch to check my gauge but also to find a spine for the back and checked whether I wanted a plain column of rib or a twisted stitch. Just seeing the knitted swatch is such a detail is like yarn porn. And, yes, there is such a thing. We knitters know all about this.

I specified that I wanted orange buttons with brown in them. Siri made the perfect match as you can see. Each button is like a piece of jewellery with immaculate texture to it. The design is based on the silver broches for the traditional folk costume, called “bunad” in Norwegian. They are moulded in plastic then painted with several layers.

As always I am impressed by the composition of the photos, making sure the background matches or contrasts the object in the photograph. It is such a fun and successful collaboration. Take a look at these previous designs: Helka, Gyda and Icelandic Jacket.

Photoshoot at Bøler Church: Ena

The next set of photos from our shoot is of Ena, knitted in The Fibre Company’s Acadia, beautifully worn by Emma Ross leaning towards the rusty cor-ten wall panel with Bøler Kirke/Church carved into it. Photographer Eivind Røhne who captured these brilliant shoots made sure to position Em so that the two letters “Bø” as in “Boo!” was visible at all times. Yes, we do have a lot of fun! Hair & makeup stylist Sissel Fylling made sure that Em’s hair was not covering up the collar. On Em’s finger is one of Kaja Gjedebo Design’s statement rings in gold-plated silver.

The bespoke buttons are made by Siri Berrefjord in a brown orange colour she matched to my knitted swatch, ideal for this dressy jacket I styled with a pair of wide silk trousers in navy. The handmade buttons are moulded in plastic after old traditional national costume/bunad silver. You can look forward to seeing her stunning photos later. Siri is also a photographer so even the yarn and stitch definition can then be studied in detail!

New Design: Ena

I love the Acadia yarn from The Fibre Co. and this amazing Orange Storm shade. Yes, it is my colour! A long cabled cardigan with a high collar was my aim. The result is Ena: Ena is Celtic for fiery. As you need to be passionate about cables to make this jacket. Ribbing in the sides make the jacket appear casually fitted. The collar in rib can be worn open or closed and folded over. Ena is knitted in the rustic Acadia with silk noil from The Fibre Company.

The Acadia yarn, made of 60% merino wool, 20% alpaca, 20% silk with 133 meters/145 yards on each 50 gram skein, makes the jacket quite dressy so I wanted bespoke jewellery-like buttons. So I sent a request to Norwegian designer Siri Berrefjord, aka fredenshavn.no, and she never disappoints… In addition to the wonderful buttons I also received a series of close-up detailed photos, which I look forward to showing you.
