Photoshoot at Architecture Museum: Gaylia

Finally, I can show you the professional photos Eivind Røhne took of the gorgeous model Silje Andresen/Team Models, with hair & makeup by Sissel Fylling at the National Museum – Architecture in Oslo at the end of November. First out is Gaylia the aline sweater with a v-neck. I decided to style it with a pair of black pencil trousers and black boots. You can not see them in these photos but they are designed by Monica Stålvang, so no surprise there. The Norwegian pattern will be published in Familien Kreativ in March, while the English pattern will be test knitted in my Ravelry group in May.

A textural cross cable adorns this a-line sweater with vents. The cable ends in two smaller cables that continue along each side of the v-neck. A check pattern that resembles playful cables adds texture to the sleeves. Gaylia is Norse for jovial, and perfect for this everyday sweater knitted in Dale, Pure Eco Wool.

The yarn Dale Pure Eco Wool was kindly sponsored by House of Yarn. It is made of 70% wool, 30% alpaca with a 112 meters/122 yards on each 50 gram ball and takes a 4 mm/US 6 needle with a gauge of 21 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm/4″ square. I choose the dark brown melange colour named Espresso 1207.

The stark concrete walls in the Klostergang/Cloister Walk around the Fehn Pavilion, makes the knitted texture stand out. For Sissel it reminded her of Marrakech in Morocco despite the freezing temperature in Oslo in late November.

As you can see I had a difficulty choosing photos and ended up with 4 photos of the sweater without the scarf plus another 4 photos with the scarf. I did not fold the scarf properly under the sweater, but it can lie a lot flatter than this, I promise.

The pullover is graded in sizes XS to 2XL with bust circumferences from 84 to 126 cm/33 to 49.5″, while the scarf is one size but can easily be adjusted to a larger or smaller size by adding or removing pattern repeats.

The hip circumference is 14 cm/5.5″ wider than the bust and gives the pullover a soft a-line look. The vents also emphasise this as well as making it appear slimmer.

The scarf is made in two parts so that the Check pattern leans to one side each just as on the sleeves. Instead of having what appeared as a loose rib facing each other on the scarf, I choose to use garter stitch.  The scarf parts are bound off using a 3-needle bind-off, so it has a number of garter stitch rows in the center. The check pattern is reversible so it looks equally nice on both sides. I am so happy with all these photos and think that the team did an amazing job! Thank you!

Behind the Scenes: Photoshoot at Architecture Museum

dscn0665It was a cold November day, our photoshoot took place at the National Museum – Architecture, but at least it was not raining. I had settled all formalities with the museum and they were expecting us, with an extra security guard since we were photographing outside around the Fehn Pavilion, in the “klostergang”/cloister, designed by Norwegian Architect Sverre Fehn. This time the team consisted of photographer Eivind Røhne, the hair & makeup artist Sissel Fylling with assistant Nora, model Silje Andresen/Team Models and assisting photographer Michael Marveng-Puckett. Silje retired as a full time model ten years ago, at the age of twenty seven, to my astonishment. She knew Sissel and was probably not too surprised that Sissel just had to cut her hair. So no change there, then.

mmp-xt1b5415We were photographing ten designs with two extra accessories, not all new designs: 2 designs returned from Interweave; Irina Pullover and Harding Cardigan; 2 old designs in need of new photos: Check Cable Cardigan and Cable On Scarf, in addition to 6 new designs. At the top is Hanasa a-line pullover, below is the Irina Pullover. I had, as usual, borrowed several skirts and a dress from designer Judith Bech. I am sure you recognise a few of those we used this time. In addition to jewellery from designer Kaja Gjedebo. Selecting from her home studio where she keeps it all, is ever so difficult and the list does seem to grow longer for each photoshoot…

dscn0653Eivind and I started by walking around the premises together with Michael, to look at possible backdrops, while Sissel was cutting and then styling Silje’s hair. We agreed that the “klostergangen”/cloister was the best one, and that there were possibilities at the front, the main entrance door to the museum, the terrace entrance to Grosch Bistro, as well as the back wall. The interior – with its vaults and the tiled entrance hall – is lit with LED lights and difficult to use as backdrops without using blitz plus a lot of extra work for Eivind to do afterwards. The main building is the old (and first) National Bank completed in 1830, by architect Christian Heinrich Grosch, while the Fehn Pavilion was built in 2008, together with the refurbishment of the building into the National Museum – Architecture.

mmp-xt1b5172I had brought several blankets to keep Silje warm, in addition to a Reindeer skin I planned for her to sit on while we were photographing Biondo scarf and a short jacket. Below you can see how that worked out. As for keeping her warm, I made sure we started with the coldest designs and then the warmer ones. But we all got cold and had a warm lunch at 12.30 inside at Grosch Bistro. I had spoken to the manager to let her know that we would be a bit in and out during the day, ordered fruit and drinks for us in the morning and that we would have our lunch when we needed a break.

mmp-xt1b5231After lunch we were ready for the last designs. Thanks to Silje’s experience we could speedily photograph the remaining garments in quick succession. In time before the November light turned blue and the approach of what we call the “blåtimen”/blue hour arriving after dusk around 3.30 pm. All the photos reflect the amazing day we had, and the wonderful team work! Thank you so much!

Sarya Pattern Released

sarya-norsk-coverIt is now several weeks since I released the Sarya pattern in English, so it is about time I tell you here on my blog. You can see the results from the test knit on the Ravelry page, and read about the adjustments the different test knitters did to the pattern like making the sleeves short instead of long. The Norwegian pattern was first published on Ravelry in March, and both languages are also available at Loveknitting. Sarya was brilliantly photographed by Eivind Røhne at the Ekeberg Restaurant last year, and worn by the gorgeous Alexandria Eissinger with hair & make up by Sissel Fylling. The stunning jewellery is by Kaja Gjedebo Design and it lifts the outfit to a party outfit. Here is my introduction to the pattern:

A beautiful lace pattern adorns the lower part of this jacket with overlapping fronts, while garter stitch rules on the top part. The stitch patterns are divided by a tuck and the jacket has identical hems. A deep elegant v-neck allows it to be worn loose creating waterfall fronts. Or you can close it with jewelry or a shawl pin for a more tailored look. The jacket is named Sarya; the night traveler hence knitted in the stunning JaggerSpun Zephyr Lace, held double, because of its luster and drape.

Notes: The body of the jacket is knitted back and forth in pieces, while the sleeves are knitted in the round. Hems, tuck and garter stitch parts are knitted using 3 mm/US 2.5, while the lace pattern is knitted using 3.5 mm/US 4. The double neckband is picked up and knitted afterwards, then sewn in place on the WS. Use a larger needle; 3.5 mm/US 4 for the neck band if you want it to pull the fronts into a slight asymmetrical shape, as done on sample.

Oydis in Familien

16_no_fa_20_innhold_handarbeid_72353My design Oydis Sweater together with the Cowl is published in the Norwegian magazine Familien issue number 20 which has 40 pages of knit. The design is not featured on the cover but on the introduction to the Handicraft section together with a photo of the handicraft editor: Åse Myhrvold Egeland. She writes: “Those who predicted that the knitting wave that hit the country a few years back would dribble out after awhile, were wrong, very wrong. The yarn producers increase their turnover every year, and magazines and books with pattern are torn off the shelves. Many begin to knit when they are expecting a baby, there are so much wonderful baby wear. In this issue you will find 40 pages of knitting patterns, so there should be something for every taste, whether you knit for yourself, your spouse, child or grandchild.”

16_no_fa_20_forside_72338Here is my introduction to the Oydis Sweater: A shadow diamond cable dominates this a-line sweater with a curved flattering hem. I-cord bands frame the bottom of the sweater, while garter stitches mark the sides and the round neckband. The sweater, with or without the cowl to dress it up, make the outfit ideal for the Goddess of good luck; Oydis. The body of the sweater is knitted flat, while the sleeves and the cowl, are knitted in the round. A fine tweed yarn is held together with an alpaca lace yarn, with a chain construction, to create a fabric with a beautiful stitch definition and a slight halo.

The Oydis Sweater and Cowl is knitted in Du Store Alpakka Dreamline Soul held together with Pickles Merino Tweed using a 4 mm/US 6 needle with a gauge of 20 stitches and 30 rows in Stocking stitch measures 10 cm/4″ square. The sweater is available in sizes XS to 2XL with a bust circumference of 84 to 126 cm/33 to 49.5″. The cowl can be worn both hanging loose or twice around the neck.

Adoe Pattern Released

Adoe COVERFinally, here it is: Adoe. As the list of knitters wanting an English version grew, I am so happy that the test knitting is coming to an end with a number of completed versions and more to come. The Norwegian pattern was published in Familien Kreativ in March. Gorgeous model Alexandria Eissinger/Sweden Models with beautiful hair & make up by Sissel Fylling, statement jewelry by Kaja Gjedebo Design, fringe skirt by Judith Bech, all brilliantly captured by photographer Eivind Røhne. Here is my introduction to the pattern: Wavy lace with garter stitch edging is the focus of this delicate jacket. The deep v-neck is adorned with scallops made by the wavy lace pattern. It is knitted in the stunning chainette yarn; Truesilk by Rowan, and intended for those special times. Adoe means time, and it seemed entirely appropriate. The body of the jacket is straight and knitted in pieces, while the sleeves are knitted in the round. Close the jacket with a beautiful brooch.

Helka Pattern Released

Helka COVERThe successful test knit of Helka ended a week ago, and I am very pleased to release the English pattern. My skillful test knitters have improved the pattern, and I added their useful notes. The Norwegian pattern was first published in Familien Kreativ in March. Above you see it worn by the gorgeous model Alexandria Eissinger/Sweden Models, with beautiful hair & make up by Sissel Fylling and jewelry by Kaja Gjedebo Design, all brilliantly captured by Eivind Røhne. The buttons are bespoke and like jewelry designed by Siri Berrefjord, you can see them close-up in this blogpost. Here is my introduction to the pattern: A long straight classical jacket with woven cables in a diamond pattern that ends in a rib. The cables are erased into a rib, then into stockinette stitch in the sides. Named after Helka the prosperous one, it has a deep v-neck and a double button band, leaving all the glory to the cables. Use it with a belt or adorn it with beautiful buttons like these jewelry ones by Siri Berrefjord.

Elora Pattern Released

Elora COVERThe English pattern Elora has now been released after a successful test knit in my Ravelry group. As always I thoroughly enjoy seeing the design knitted in different colors, yarns and with modifications such as a a short collar and button bands. The bolero was gorgeously worn by Alexandria Eissinger with hair & make up by Sissel Fylling, jewelry by Kaja Gjedebo Design and a stunning felted wedding gown by Judith Bech, all captured brilliantly by Eivind Røhne. Elora was first published in Norwegian in Familien Kreativ in March. Here is my introduction to the pattern: A beautiful reversible lace pattern adorns this bolero with a slightly longer scarf collar you can fold and pin as you desire. Garter stitches make up the edges of the bolero and divide the stitch pattern from the stocking stitch sides. Named after the giving of the laurel; the crown of victory hence ideal for this garment made in a wool and cashmere mixture by Mondial. The bolero is worn over the wedding gown “Secret”, designed by Judith Bech.

Hertha Pattern Released

Hertha COVERFinally, I have been able to release the last of the English patterns brilliantly photographed by Eivind Røhne at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter last Spring. Gorgeous model Anne Dorthe/Team Models is wearing the Hertha shawl with loose sleeves together with a stunning fringe skirt by Judith Bech and jewelry by Kaja Gjedebo Design. Her hair and Make up is done by Sissel Fylling. Hertha has been successfully test knitted in my Ravelry group. The pattern was first published in Norwegian in Familien Strikk last August.Hertha in old Norse means a powerful woman, ideal for this modern shawl with a shawl collar, that can be worn as a scarf around the neck, a shawl around the shoulders, or as a top; if worn upside down and pinned together with a shawl pin. A traditional lace pattern with shadow triangles in half stocking stitch and half garter stitch, knitted in the divine Jaggerspun Zephyr Lace held double.

Oili Pattern Released

The test knit of the English pattern to Oili is completed and I am happy to release the pattern on Ravelry. Oili was first published in Norwegian in Familien Strikk last August. Above you see it worn by the stunning model Anne Dorthe/Team Models, with hair & make up by Sissel Fylling, jewelry by Kaja Gjedebo Design all brilliantly captured by Eivind Røhne at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter last May. Here is my introduction to the pattern: Playful cables are the focus of this classic straight top, knitted in the round with each side marked by garter stitches. Narrow bands of garter stitch band frame the armholes, neckline and bottom edge. The top has a matching cowl, with cables all around. Notions: 3 stitch markers, cable needle, waste yarn, 4 mm/F-5 crochet hook (for provisional cast-on) and yarn needle.

Gauge: 24 sts and 32 rows in st st using 4 mm/US 6 measures 10 cm/4″ square. 1 cable using 4 mm/US 6 measures 6 cm/2.25″ wide and 16 cm/6.25″ long.

Notes: The top is worked in the round to the armholes, then separated. The cowl is worked in the round as a long tube, and then the ends are joined together.

Nuala Pattern Released

Nuala COVERWe seem to have skipped Spring in Oslo and went straight into Summer. A perfect time to release the English pattern of Nuala a straight summer shawl that can be buttoned into a shrug with a matching cowl. The pattern has been test knitted in my Ravelry group. The Norwegian pattern was published in Familien Julens Småstrikk last November. Above you see the set worn by model Anne Dorthe/Team Models with hair & make up by Sissel Fylling, jewelry by Kaja Gjedebo Design, all brilliantly captured by Eivind Røhne. Here is my introduction to the pattern: An intricate woven lacy stitch pattern by Lynne Barr is highlighted with the cable structured Softknit Cotton by Rowan in this reversible rectangular shawl that can be buttoned into a shrug. Wear it with a cowl as a collar.

Finished Measurement: Shawl: Width: 42.5 cm/16.75″. Length: 143 cm/56.25″ Cowl: Width: 70 cm/27.5″. Height: 28 cm/11″

Gauge: 17 sts and 25 rows in Dropped sts using 4.5 mm/US 7 measures 10 cm/4″ square. 20 sts and 28 rows in st st measures 10 cm/4″ square.

 Notes: The shawl and cowl are both knitted flat. You can easily adjust the width of the shawl and the circumference of the cowl by removing or adding pattern repeats of 9-sts. The first 4 buttonholes are worked on the RS, while the last 4 buttonholes are worked on the WS. Both are made using the same one-row method. The cowl is sewn together, but add buttonholes rows instead if you prefer and work selvedge st as on shawl.
